How Global Companies Train Teams to Negotiate in English

BUSINESS NEWS IN ENGLISH

Learning English Is Not Enough: Teams Need to Perform

Imagine an employee who can read reports in English, understand emails and follow international presentations.

Then the employee enters a negotiation.

Suddenly, the situation becomes more difficult.

The client asks an unexpected question.

The price is challenged.

A deadline must be changed.

The employee needs to disagree politely, make a counteroffer and explain a limitation immediately.

This is why many companies are moving beyond traditional language training.

Corporate English programmes increasingly focus on real workplace situations such as meetings, presentations, negotiations and professional writing. Current British Council programmes, for example, include role-based communication practice and negotiation skills adapted to industries and professional objectives.

A typical negotiation programme may include several stages.

First, employees' English levels and communication needs are assessed.

Next, learners study useful language for situations such as:

  • making proposals;

  • asking questions;

  • discussing prices;

  • disagreeing politely;

  • making concessions;

  • clarifying conditions.

But knowing the expressions is only the beginning.

Employees also need to use them under pressure.

For this reason, practical training may include role plays and simulated business situations.

A learner may play the role of a sales manager negotiating with a customer. Another learner may represent a supplier discussing delivery conditions.

The objective is to move from:

“I know this expression.”

to:

“I can use this expression during a real negotiation.”

Technology is adding another layer. Some corporate programmes now combine teachers with AI-powered speaking practice, giving employees additional opportunities to practise independently and receive feedback.

For global companies, this distinction matters.

Negotiation requires more than grammar.

It requires language, confidence, listening, strategy and the ability to respond in real time.

Why It Matters for Business

“Does this employee know English?”

e passa a ser:

“Can this employee negotiate effectively in English?”
