What Does It Mean to Learn With Artificial Intelligence?

What Does It Mean to Learn With AI?

Imagine two students.

Both need to write an essay.

The first student asks an AI system:

“Write my essay for me.”

The student receives a good text, makes a few changes and submits it.

The second student uses AI differently.

First, the student writes an outline. Then the student asks AI to identify weak arguments, suggest questions and challenge some ideas. Finally, the student decides which suggestions are useful and rewrites the essay independently.

Both students used artificial intelligence.

But did they learn in the same way?

Probably not.

This difference is becoming an important subject in education.

The OECD's 2026 Digital Education Outlook explains that better performance with AI does not automatically mean better learning. Students may produce stronger work while using a tool but fail to develop the knowledge or skills required to perform independently later.

Research published in 2026 also suggests that generative AI can support critical and creative thinking when it is integrated into carefully designed learning activities. However, unstructured use can encourage students to transfer too much thinking to the technology.

This suggests a different role for AI.

Instead of being an answer machine, it can become a thinking partner.

Students can ask AI to:

  • explain;

  • question;

  • compare;

  • provide feedback;

  • create practice;

  • challenge an argument.

The objective is not simply to finish the task.

The objective is to finish the task and become more capable after completing it.

That may be one of the most important differences between using AI and learning with AI.

Key Idea

Language Focus

Contrast: although, however and while

Although

Although AI can improve performance, it does not always produce learning.

However

AI can provide useful feedback. However, students still need to evaluate it.

While

While one student uses AI to replace thinking, another uses it to support thinking.

Essas estruturas ajudam a evitar afirmações simplistas como:

AI is good.

ou

AI is bad.

O registro acadêmico prefere analisar condições, diferenças e limites.

Check Your Understanding

  1. How does the first student use AI?

  2. How does the second student use AI differently?

  3. Why does better performance not necessarily mean better learning?

  4. What does the article mean by calling AI a “thinking partner”?

  5. What is the main difference between using AI and learning with AI?

Critical Thinking

  1. Which activities should a student complete before asking AI for help?

  2. How could a teacher design an assignment that allows AI but still requires students to think independently?

Mini Academic Task

Create Your Own AI Learning Protocol

Escreva entre 120 e 150 palavras respondendo:

How can a student use AI without allowing AI to replace learning?

Organize em três partes:

Before AI

What should the student do independently?

With AI

How should the student use the tool?

After AI

What should the student check, rewrite or explain?

Use pelo menos:

although — however — while — because — therefore

Answer Guide

1. The first student asks AI to write the essay and makes only small changes.

2. The second student first develops ideas independently and then uses AI for questions, feedback and challenges.

3. Because a student can produce a good result with technological assistance without developing the ability to perform independently.

4. AI supports the student's thinking instead of replacing it.

5. Learning with AI should make the student more capable after the activity, rather than simply helping the student finish the activity.
